Our youngest asked me why Guy Fauwkes had tried to blow up the king and parliament, and I had to say I didn’t really know.
I got a book from the library called The Gunpowder Plot.
After a very dull start, it developed into a great read. The plotters were devout but overly-optimistic about their prospects. How the plot was discovered and used as government propaganda was very well described.
I have to say I was appalled at the barbaric sentencing. “Hung, drawn and quartered” is gratuitously cruel.
