On starting a new job

So I’ve been back in work for 2 months. How’s it going?

It’s fascinating, actually. Some things to notice…

  • You get given the team that are there. Seems obvious, but when you’ve spent a few years building up your team and know everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, and have developed mutual trust, it’s odd getting to know your new team. More than that, there might be some people who you just wouldn’t have hired - do you bring them along, or encourage them to go elsewhere?
  • A new challenge is envigorating. You don’t realise how routine things have become until you lose your routine! A new environment means you have to think everything through again. It’s interesting, and allows you to prune stuff you know didn’t work so well before. Then there’s the challenge of working through problems you’ve not seen before - very interesting indeed.
  • You can be a star. If the place you join isn’t as advanced as where you’ve been, you look like a star for introducing “new” things that you personally take for granted
