There’s a common modern phenomenon in business that I see everywhere: Remote working.
Companies set up “virtual teams” where, say, 10 people are called a team even though they’re split across 5 locations.
Managers spend disproportionate amounts of time travelling about. Stuff needs sorting that would take seconds face to face but longer by phone.
Possibly most important, it’s not fun. It’s harder to joke about stuff; harder to get to know people.
Despite the difficulties that can arise, companies should put more effort into co-locating teams. Everyone would be much better off, including our families and even the environment.
